Did you know that over a quarter of World Bank policy reports have never been downloaded? There is increasing pressure from donors and others to apply evidence and research in our work, but little guidance on how to use it in practice. In international development we are often good at producing evidence: monitoring, evaluations, impact assessments and so on. But how can we use evidence, evaluation and research to inform our own work and to influence others?

This short course explores, from a practical perspective, what we mean by evidence, how we can work with evidence, and how we can use it in our work. You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of evidence. You will learn how to identify sources of evidence, assess the quality of evidence, and integrate the use of evidence into your own work and organization. The course will also touch on debates around rigor and the politics of evidence.

Course format and cost

The course is three full days, involving practical exercises based on your own organisational contexts. A pre-assessment questionnaire will be used to identify thematic areas for the practical sessions during the course. Included in the price is a one-to-one coaching session via skype to follow-up on actions and support you to overcome challenges in applying the skills you have learned in your context. A full course manual will be provided to support you in applying learnings after the course, and guide you to further information and resources.
